законы об "исключении китайцев"Федеральные законы 1882, 1892 и 1902, призванные предотвратить иммиграцию китайцев в США. Право китайцев на иммиграцию в США получило формальное подтверждение в договоре Берлингейма [ Burlingame Treaty] (1868), но на Западном побережье конкуренция между китайцами и местным населением привела к анти-китайской пропаганде, усилившейся во время экономического спада 70-х гг. XIX вв. Кульминацией конкуренции стали антикитайские бунты 1877 в г. Сан-Франциско. В 1879 Конгресс принял закон, значительно ограничивавший въезд китайцев, но президент Р. Хейс [ Hayes, Rutherford Birchard] наложил на него вето. Тем не менее, закон об "исключении китайцев" 1882 на 10 лет полностью запретил иммиграцию китайцев. С 1875 Конгресс стал принимать решения о запрете на въезд определенным категориям иммигрантов, начав с преступников, а затем отнеся к нежелательным категориям [exclusion] нищих, больных, проституток, алкоголиков, неграмотных, анархистов и марксистов, но это оказалось малоэффективным, так как их число составляло в среднем около 1 процента приезжавших. Конгресс стал вводить ограничения по этническому признаку. В 1882 был запрещен въезд китайцам (см Chinese Exclusion Acts), в 1907 - японцам (см Japanese Americans). Иммиграционные законы [ Immigration Acts] 1921, 1924 и 1952 утвердили систему квот, установившую "потолок" на ежегодное число иммигрантов определенной этнической группы, а также предпочтение приему выходцев из развитых европейских стран. После второй мировой войны как особую группу США стали принимать беженцев. Иммиграционный закон 1965 [ Immigration Act of 1965] отменил систему квот и ввел новые критерии приема. Увеличился приток иммигрантов из Южной и Восточной Европы. К началу 70-х число иммигрантов из Азии превысило число европейских иммигрантов, повысилось число приезжающих из стран Латинской Америки [ Hispanic Americans]. В 1980-85 в страну (легально и нелегально) въезжало до 3 млн. человек. В 1986 был принят Закон о реформе и контроле иммиграционной политики [ Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986], внесший значительные изменения в положение нелегальных иммигрантов [ illegal alien].
